Trapping for Survival is a specialized field course that introduces students to the principles and techniques of primitive trapping for wilderness survival situations. Designed for outdoorsmen who want to expand their fieldcraft knowledge, this course focuses on understanding how trapping can become a viable food procurement method when survival—not recreation—is the objective.
Building upon the skills learned in Foundations: Bushcraft & Survival, students will spend the day learning how to identify animal sign, recognize travel corridors, evaluate habitat, and construct effective primitive trapping systems using natural materials and minimal equipment.
Topics include:
Survival trapping principles
Understanding animal behavior and movement
Reading animal sign and identifying active travel corridors
Trap location selection
Primitive trap construction
Natural materials and field expedient techniques
Ethical and legal considerations
Survival food procurement
Field safety and responsible decision-making
Instruction combines classroom discussion with extensive hands-on field exercises, allowing students to practice trap construction and placement techniques in realistic outdoor environments while developing practical wilderness skills.
No actual animals will be trapped during this course. The focus is on education, fieldcraft, survival preparedness, and developing the knowledge necessary to responsibly apply these techniques in a true survival situation.
This course is part of the Vegvisir Outdoors Field Instruction Program and prepares students for more advanced field instruction, including Hunter's Wilderness Campcraft and the Cold Weather Survival Challenge.
