Foundations: Fire & Food builds upon the skills introduced in Foundations: Bushcraft & Survival by teaching students how to safely create fire and prepare food in an outdoor environment using practical, time-tested methods.

This hands-on field course focuses on two of the most important aspects of wilderness self-reliance: producing dependable fire and preparing quality meals in camp. Students will develop confidence using multiple fire-starting methods while learning practical outdoor cooking techniques that can be applied during hunting trips, camping adventures, and emergency situations.

Instruction is led by Professional Cook Mike of Compass, Coal & Cooking, who combines culinary experience with practical outdoor knowledge to demonstrate techniques that are both effective and approachable.

Topics include:

  • Fire safety and fire management

  • Fire lays and fire-building techniques

  • Fire starting with modern and traditional methods

  • Fuel selection and fire maintenance

  • Outdoor cooking fundamentals

  • Camp kitchen organization

  • Cooking over open fires and coals

  • Dutch oven and cast-iron cooking

  • Meal planning for the outdoors

  • Food safety and sanitation in the field

Throughout the day, students will actively participate in building fires, preparing meals, and learning techniques that can immediately improve their confidence and capability in the outdoors.

This course is part of the Vegvisir Outdoors Field Instruction Program and provides an excellent bridge between foundational bushcraft skills and more advanced field instruction.
