Foundations: Bushcraft & Survival is the starting point for every student's journey through the Vegvisir Outdoors Field Instruction Program. Designed for beginners and experienced outdoorsmen alike, this immersive field course builds the core skills needed to travel, camp, hunt, and operate safely in the outdoors.

Students receive hands-on instruction centered around the 5 C's of Survival:

  • Cutting

  • Cover

  • Cordage

  • Container

  • Combustion

Throughout the day, students develop practical skills in:

  • Safe knife, saw, and axe use

  • Firecraft fundamentals

  • Shelter selection and construction

  • Water procurement and purification

  • Campcraft

  • Navigation awareness

  • Field safety

  • Practical problem-solving

  • Outdoor decision-making

Every lesson is taught outdoors under realistic field conditions with an emphasis on building confidence through experience—not simply watching demonstrations.

This course serves as the foundation for all advanced Vegvisir Outdoors field instruction. Students who complete Foundations are prepared to continue into specialized training, including:

  • Foundations: Fire & Food

  • Chasing Whitetails in the Cold

  • Chasing Wild Turkeys

  • Trapping for Survival

  • Hunter's Wilderness Campcraft

  • Cold Weather Survival Challenge

Course Duration: Approximately one full training day

Recommended Minimum Age:12 years old (or with prior approval)
