Chasing Whitetails in the Cold is a specialized field course designed for hunters who want to better understand late-season whitetail behavior and improve their decision-making when hunting during cold-weather conditions.

Building upon the skills learned in Foundations: Bushcraft & Survival, students will spend the day in the field learning how weather, terrain, food sources, pressure, and changing seasonal conditions influence deer movement and hunter success.

Topics include:

  • Late-season whitetail behavior

  • Reading terrain and travel corridors

  • Bedding and feeding area identification

  • Scouting techniques and sign interpretation

  • Stand and blind location selection

  • Wind, weather, and thermal considerations

  • Ethical shot opportunities and decision-making

  • Cold-weather preparation and safety

  • Developing a personalized hunting strategy

Instruction combines infield discussion with extensive hands-on field exercises, allowing students to evaluate real habitat features while applying practical hunting concepts in realistic environments.

No actual hunting is conducted during this course. The focus is on education, field observation, scouting techniques, and developing the knowledge and confidence necessary to become a more capable and ethical whitetail hunter.

This course is part of the Vegvisir Outdoors Field Instruction Program and prepares students for more advanced training opportunities, including Hunter's Wilderness Campcraft and the Cold Weather Survival Challenge.

Prerequisites

Required:

  • Valid New Hampshire Hunter Safety Course or

  • Student's home state Hunter Safety Course

  • Current or expired hunting license

Course Duration: Approximately one full training day
